Late fragment

American writer and poet Raymond Carver was your classic troubled soul: he struggled with alcohol abuse and had constant financial problems. It’s not such a surprise then that his poetry isn’t oozing with romance. He’s mostly known for his brief storytelling, which is exemplified in this poem. The message? All we want is to love and be loved…

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Raymond Carver
