I want to apologize

Even though I’m not American, the events of the past week have touched a nerve. It really feels like we’re taking steps back instead of forward. But I do admire the resilience American women (and men) are showing. This poem is for them and for every woman for that matter. Because they all deserve this. This and much, much more.

i want to apologize to all the woman
i have called pretty.
before i’ve called them intelligent or brave.
i am sorry i made it sound as though
something as simple as what you’ve been born with
is the most you have to be proud of
when your spirit has crushed mountains
from now on i will say things like, you are resilient
or, you are extraordinary.
not because i don’t think you are pretty.
but because you are so much more than that.
